I hope everyone had a wonderful thanksgiving.   It was really nice to take a few days to get to see my family and do a little bit of Christmas shopping.   I know at least for me, getting those few   days to see everyone really makes me thankful, especially for those who for one reason or another aren't able to see their family on Thanksgiving.   Of course, one of the wonderful things of getting to see family, is how when family gets together, they all like to share.   They even like to share their germs.   Everybody had a cold.   As I was thinking through that, it reminded me of a story I once heard about a little boy who had to go to the doctor to get a shot.   He wasn't real thrilled about it, but he agreed.   When he got to the Doctor's office, the little boy didn't want to go in.   He asked if they could go to a different doctor.   When his parents asked him why,   He looked up at the sign that said "Medical Practic...

Most of us, I think, don't like to be told what to do.  Over the last few days, I was at the National Catholic Youth Conference with about 25,000 high school teens from around the country.  It was a wonderful experience, and I'm sure I'll have lots to say about it as time goes on.  Yet, like any trip with teenagers, of course, there's always a few that don't listen.  At the same time, we had a wonderful group of kids who were well behaved, listened, and enjoyed themselves.  Some of us were talking about previous trips we had run, and we all agreed, one of the great thing about taking teens on a trip is that when they're asked to do something, for the most part they listen.  Adults, on the other hand, aren't quite so used to taking orders from someone else.  Half the time they wander off, and the group leader is pulling their hair out to figure out where everyone has gone. 5th Sunday

Last Sunday, we celebrated the feast of Candlemas, the presentation of the Lord in the temple,   when Simeon tells Mary and Joseph that their son will be a light to the nations.  So in honor of Simeon, we always hold the blessing of candles on the feast of the presentation. I know we've all had candles at home at some point.  Perhaps it's the citronella candle we light in the summer to keep the bugs away, or maybe some of us still have those candles on the dinner table, or maybe when the power goes out, we have candles in the back somewhere to give us a little bit of light at home.  Now when we do light a candle during the day, sometimes, if we take it out in the bright sunlight, we can hardly even tell if it's lit.  The flame almost seems to disappear in the light.  Yet, it's amazing how at night, once it gets completely dark, just how that one tiny little solitary flame, that seemed light nothing in the bright daylight, can light up an ent...
